Patchwork placemats

Size 33 x 48cm

You will need (for a set of six)
• selection of cotton floral prints
• 100 x 150cm backing fabric
• 100 x 150cm lightweight batting
• matching coloured thread
• tacking thread

To make
1 A 1cm seam allowance has been included in the measurements. Cut a rectangle 24 x 34cm for the centre panel. Cut 5cm strips for the inner border and 9cm strips for the outer border. You can cut these strips to fit the patchwork as you work.
2 With the right sides of the fabric facing, join the inner border to the centre panel; start with the lengthwise strips and then complete the border with the side strips. Press all seams open as you work.
3 In the same way, join the outer border to the inner border, pressing the seams open as you work. Work a row of top-stitch detail on the borders, working from side to side of each fabric strip and crossing the seams to complete the corner feature.
4 Cut a piece of batting the same size as the patchwork. Place the batting on the wrong side of the patchwork and tack in place. Treat the patchwork and batting as one layer of fabric.
5 Cut the backing fabric the same size as the patchwork. With the right sides facing, sew the backing fabric to the patchwork around the sides, leaving an opening of 10cm in one side for turning. Clip the corners diagonally and, if necessary, trim the seams.
6 Turn through to the right side through the opening. Remove the tacking stitches. Close the opening with small, neat hand stitches. To complete the placemat, work a row of top-stitching close to the edge, making sure you sew through all three layers of fabric.
