Graphic felt headboard

Go graphic with felt and make this simple wooden headboard with a bold design.

You will need
• 16mm Supawood
• one 1 100 x 1 450mm piece
• two 1 100 x 100mm pieces
• two 1 418 x 100mm pieces
• wood glue
• eighteen white corner blocks
• seventy-two 4 x 16mm chipboard screws
• electric drill and 2,5mm drill bit
• screwdriver
• medium sponge rollers and trays
• wood primer
• white enamel paint
• 150 x 100cm red felt
• fabric marker
• rotary cutter and cutting mat
• sharp fabric scissors
• multipurpose glue

To make
1 Place the 1 100 x 1 450mm Supawood piece flat on a work surface. Place the two 1 100 x 100mm pieces with their 16mm sides onto the large piece at either short end then glue in place, ensuring the ends are flush and that the edges are straight.
2 Place three corner blocks along each of the sides and mark the positions of the screws. Drill a small pilot hole for each screw before screwing the corner blocks in place.
3 Once the short ends are in place, place the longer 1 418 x 100mm pieces in position and glue them. Leave to dry and then screw them in place. Screw the corner blocks into the upright corners.
4 When the construction of the headboard is complete, turn it over and apply a coat of wood primer. Leave the primer to dry overnight before painting the headboard with two coats of white enamel paint. Leave the first coat to dry before applying the second.
5 Choose a simple, bold design to decorate the headboard. Enlarge it if necessary and then trace it directly onto the felt using a fabric marker. Place the felt on a cutting mat and cut out the pattern using a rotary cutter. Use a pair of sharp fabric scissors for the detailed areas.
6 Arrange the felt cutouts on the headboard until you are satisfied with the overall design. Glue the cutouts in position with multipurpose glue (we used Pattex No More Nails) and leave to dry.
