Craft fridge magnets with family photos or pictures that match your kitchen décor. These also make a wonderful gift!
You will need
• pictures of your choice
• piece of cardboard
• glass mosaic tiles
• small magnets
• resin or high-gloss polymer coating
• epoxy glue
• modge podge
• craft knife, cutting mat and metal ruler
• tongue depressors or ice-cream sticks
Good idea Seal your pictures front and back with modge podge before you stick them to the tiles. This will stop the resin or polymer coating distorting the paper.
2 Use the window to draw blocks the same size as the tiles over the pictures that you want to use for the magnets. Cut the pictures out.
3 Paint a mosaic tile with modge podge and place your first picture on top. Paint another coat of modge podge over it to seal it and to make it stick. Leave to dry then paint on another coat of modge podge. Repeat with all the pictures you want to use for magnets.
4 Prepare the resin or polymer coating according to the manufacturer’s instructions. We used Pratley Kraftex Pratliglo (available at hardware stores and craft shops). Mix enough to cover all your tiles with a layer.
5 Use a tongue depressor or ice-cream stick and drop a little bit of the mixture onto the first tile. Take care not to use too much, as it must just reach the edges and not run over.
6 Spread the mixture carefully into the corners with the stick so the top of the tile is completely covered. Repeat with all the other tiles. Set aside to harden – the time needed for this will depend on the product used.
7 Place the tile picture-side down on your work surface. Take a toothpick and mix the epoxy glue according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
8 Apply the glue with the toothpick to the back of the magnet and stick it in the middle of the tile. Repeat with the rest of the magnets and leave to dry for the required time. Make sure the resin has set before you use the magnets.
