These biscuits are not only for treats, but will help with your dog’s training too.
Bone dog biscuits
Makes: about 30
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Baking time: 50 minutes
Oven temperature: 160°C
• 70ml (65g) soft margarine
• 10ml Marmite
• 140ml (75g) milk powder
• 1 large egg
• 715ml (500g) whole-wheat flour
• 125ml (50g) powdered biltong
1 Mix the margarine and Marmite together and add 220ml hot water. Stir in the milk powder and egg to form a smooth paste.
2 Add the flour and the powdered biltong to the margarine mixture a little at a time then knead the mixture for five minutes. Roll out to 1cm thick. Cut dog-bone shapes out and place onto a greased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven for 50 minutes or until golden brown. Leave the biscuits to cool and harden before storing in an airtight container.
Cat-shaped peanut-butter dog biscuits
Makes: about 40
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Baking time: 40 minutes
Oven temperature: 160°C
• 250ml (105g) rolled oats
• 500ml (350g) whole-wheat flour
• 250ml (310g) smooth peanut butter
• 60ml canola oil
• 1 large egg
1 Mix all the ingredients together with 250ml water. Roll the mixture out on a surface liberally sprinkled with some extra flour until about 5mm thick.
2 Cut shapes out of the dough and place onto a greased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven for 20 minutes. Turn the biscuits over and bake for another 20 minutes or until cooked through and golden. Leave to cool and harden on the baking sheets before storing in an airtight container.
Packaging
Put the biscuits in an airtight jar. Tie a ribbon around it. For the gift tag, print your dog’s name onto scrapbooking paper. Trace a silhouette of your dog’s breed around the name, cut out and glue to the ribbon.
