Decoupaged plates

Create a designer piece with modge podge, pretty paper and a little paint.

You will need
• plate or flat container made of clear glass
• thin pretty paper
• PVA or craft paint in the colour of your choice
• modge podge
• varnish
• brushes, roller and drip tray
• craft knife

To make
1 Place the glass plate upside down on a bowl so it is easy for you to work – hold the plate in place with Prestik so it doesn’t move around. Clean the underneath section of the glass plate with vinegar to make sure there are no fingerprints or greasy marks.

2 Prepare your paper. It must be slightly larger than your plate and not too thick. We used a colour photocopy of scrapbooking paper. Paint a layer of modge podge on the base of the plate when you are ready.

3 Work quickly and place the paper picture-side down on the wet modge podge. Smooth it with your hands from the middle outwards and also make sure the corners are neat – be careful that the paper doesn’t tear.

4 Now paint a layer of modge podge over the paper and smooth it again with your hands. Leave to dry overnight. Repeat with another layer of modge podge, if you think it is necessary.

5 When it is completely dry, trim the edges neatly with the craft knife.

6 For an attractive finish, paint the base of the plate with PVA or craft paint in the colour of your choice. Leave to dry completely and seal with a suitable varnish – we used Dala Heat Resistant Hard Varnish.
