• 50g cones of DK 100% pure cotton in 18 different colours (you will need approximately 2 balls per colour)

• 4-18 different colours in double knit 100% cotton

Abbreviations

To prepare
Remove the original canvas from the deckchair taking note of how it was assembled on the wooden frame. Measure it, allowing extra for the seams and for the casings. From the white canvas fabric, cut a new backing according to the measurements. Sew the side seams closed and leave the casings open at this stage.

Crochet a flower square
NOTE
Each square is made with four colours; these are referred to in the instructions as colours A, B, C and D. You can choose any colour sequence you wish for your squares. Try to distribute the colours evenly so you do not run out of some of the colours while you are working. Each square measures 8 x 8cm.
Using a 3,5mm crochet hook and colour A, work 3 ch for the foundation. Join the last ch to the 1 st ch with a sl st to make a ring. Fasten off.

Round 1 (inside of flower):
Work 15 trebles into 3rd chain from the hook. Join with a slip stitch to the 3rd chain.
Fasten off.

Round 2 (petals of flower):
Insert the hook between 2 trebles and join colour B to round 1. Chain 3. Work 3 trebles in same space as the join. * Skip the next 2 trebles from round 1 and work a group of 4 trebles into the next space *. Repeat from * to * until you have 8 groups of 4 trebles each. Join with a slip stitch to the 3rd chain made that started round 2. Fasten off.

Round 3 (square):
Insert hook in the space between 2 petals and join colour C to round 2. Chain 3. Work 2 half trebles and 1 treble into the same space as the join. * (3 trebles, 2 double trebles, 3 trebles) into the next space between petals to form the corner. (1 treble, 2 half trebles, 1 treble) into the next space between petals.* Repeat from * to * 2 more times. In the last space between 2 petals work (3 trebles, 2 double trebles, 3 trebles). Join with a slip stitch to the 3rd chain made that started round 3. Fasten off.

Round 4:
Using colour D, join in the back loop of the second double treble on any one of the 4 corners.
Double crochet into the same space. * 1 double crochet into the back loop of each of the next 11 stitches. Double crochet in the next stitch. *
Repeat from * to * 3 times more, replacing the last double crochet with a slip stitch into the 1st double crochet of round 4. Fasten off.
Weave in all loose ends.

Border
Using a 3,5mm crochet hook and one bold contrast colour, work a border of dc around the four edges. In the same way, work two more border rows, working each in a different colour. This border will hold the outer patchwork pieces in place. This completes the crochet section of the cover.

To complete
Machine stitch or hand stitch the crochet patchwork to the side seams of the canvas backing and the top and bottom edges of the canvas. Fold the casings in place and machine stitch through all layers of fabric. It may be necessary to work a double layer of stitching at the casings to reinforce the stitching. Refit the canvas onto the frame as originally designed.
