Crochet a heart

Decorate a gift with this crocheted heart – and give two gifts in one!

You will need
• scraps of cotton DK yarn in the colour of your choice (ours was made using Vinni’s Colours shade no 521)
• 3mm crochet hook
• darning needle with big eye
• polyester stuffing

To crochet
(make 2)

1 Start at lower point. Using 3mm crochet hook, work 4 ch (this is the 1st tr), work 2 tr in the 4th ch from hook = 3 tr altogether, turn.

2 Inc 2 tr evenly across row = 5 tr altogether, turn.

3 Inc 3 tr evenly across row = 8 tr altogether, turn.

4 Inc 4 tr evenly across row = 12 tr altogether, turn.

5 Inc 4 tr evenly across row = 16 tr altogether, turn.

6 Now work one row into these 16 tr without inc. Beg with 2 ch, turn.

7 Beg with right-hand side of heart. Work 8 tr only into tr of previous row, turn.

8 Work 2 ch (count as 1st htr), htr in next st, yrh and pull through two loops on hook (1 st decreased), rep 3 times more, thus dec 4 sts across the row, turn.

9 Work 2 ch, then 1 htr in each of the next 3 sts (keep last loop of each st on hook), yrh and pull through all four loops on hook, fasten off.

10 Beg with left-hand side of heart. Join yarn in centre of heart and work 8 tr across rem 8 sts, turn.

11 Complete as for right-hand side, steps 8-9.

12 This completes the heart. Rep steps 1-11 for 2nd heart (picture below).

To make up
Place the two hearts together with the wrong sides facing and crochet together with dc. Beg in the middle of one side and work to the point. At point, work 1 dc, 1 ch and 1 dc in the stitch at the heart’s point to crochet evenly around the point.
Leave an opening in one side and stuff the heart before closing the side with dc (picture below).
