Use leftover yarn for this project.
You will need
Note Refer to the shade numbers from the deckchair cover – related article below.
• Oddments of Rowan handknit cotton in each of the following colours: Aqua (A); Bermuda (B); Sugar (C); Nectar (D); Celery (E); Primrose (F); Soap (G); Ecru (H); and Seafarer (I)
• 1 pair of 4mm knitting needles
• sufficient length of ecru-coloured woven tape 1cm wide
• sewing thread
• charts (see below)
Tension
20 sts and 28 rows to 10cm over st st using 4mm knitting needles
Flags
There are six different designs for the flags; repeat them until you have sufficient to hang from the tape.
Flag A
Main section: using 4mm Ns and yarn H, c/on 20 sts. Starting with a k row, work 28 rows in st st. C/off.
Edging: with the RS of main section facing and using yarn F, pick up and k 20 sts along the c/on edge. K 2 rows.
Next row (RS): sl 1, k1, psso, k to last 2 sts, k2 tog.
Next row: k.
Rep these 2 rows, until 2 sts rem on the Ns, ending with a RS row.
Next row (WS): k2 tog. Fasten off.
Flag B
Main section: using 4mm Ns and yarn B, c/on 20 sts. Work in st st stripe patt as folls: Work 2 rows in yarn B, 2 rows in yarn H. Rep these 4 rows 6 times more. C/off.
Edging: work as given for flag A, but using yarn C.
Flag C
Main section: using 4mm Ns and yarn B, c/on 20 sts. Work in st st stripe patt as folls: Work 2 rows in yarn A, 2 rows in yarn B, 2 rows in yarn I. Rep these 6 rows 3 times more. Now work 2 rows in yarn A, 2 rows in yarn B. C/off.
Edging: work as given for flag A, but using yarn H.
Flag D
Main section: using 4mm Ns and yarn G, c/on 21 sts. Work in embossed patt as given on chart A. Read all RS rows from right to left and all WS rows from left to right. Tick off each row on the chart once you have completed it. When all 28 rows have been worked, c/off.
Edging: work as given for flag A, but using yarn E.
Flag E
Main section: using 4mm Ns and yarn G, c/on 21 sts. Work heart motifs as given on chart B. Read all RS rows from right to left and all WS rows from left to right. Join in yarns as required. Tick off each row on the chart once you have completed it. When all 28 rows have been worked, c/off.
Edging: work as given for flag A, but using yarn A.
Flag F
Main section: using 4mm Ns and yarn H, c/on 21 sts. Work detailed stripe patt as given on chart C. Read all RS rows from right to left and all WS rows from left to right. Join in yarns as required. Tick off each row on the chart once you have completed it. When all 28 rows have been worked c/off.
Edging: work as given for flag A, but using yarn F.
To complete bunting flags
Darn in loose ends of yarn at the back of the work. Hand-sew the corners of each flag to the woven tape, spacing the flags evenly apart and making sure that the flags are not placed with the same design next to each other. Leave sufficient tape at each end of the flags to tie to posts or poles.
