Take out your pretty cracked plates and make them part of an artwork – by using them for mosaic projects. Here is a clever idea for a mosaic cake stand.
You will need
• cake stand that you wish to decorate
• mosaic tiles
• tile adhesive
• white grout
• plastic bucket
• plastic knife or ice cream stick
• sponge
Before you start
We used a side plate for this project. To make mosaic tiles from the plate, wear safety glasses and cut the plate into pieces using a tile cutter. Alternatively, place the plate upside down between two old towels and hit it with a hammer on the ridge until the pieces are the desired size.
To make
1 Place the pieces around the inside edge of the cake stand and glue them in place by smearing a little tile adhesive (we used Alcolin Flexi-Tiler) onto the back of each piece.
2 Work from the centre towards the edge and glue the pieces in position. Leave to stand for a few hours or overnight until the glue is completely dry, or according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
3 Mix the tile grout in a plastic container according to the instructions given by the manufacturer.
4 Work the grout carefully in between all the mosaic pieces and wipe off any excess lightly with your fingers. Take care not to remove the grout from between the pieces. Smooth off to neaten the edges.
5 Clean with a damp sponge, leave the grout to set a bit then wipe with a clean sponge. Repeat until completely clean.
